About Jane

In my art quilts, I create surreal landscapes that use organic shapes derived from the flora and fauna of the natural world. I use different types of textures, such as brickwork patterns, to develop the surface and experiment with color to create different light effects. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of architectural and artificial objects with natural shapes and environments. Explosions, smoke, fragmenting structures, and brick patterns appear in my work showing my continuing investigation of the power of nature over man-made structures.

Much of my recent textile art pieces also trigger particular emotions and visual associations that relate to feminine sexuality and to my Jewish heritage. I’ve been examining loss, spirituality, and prayer. I choose fabrics because of the feelings they evoke for me and for their implied glimpses of land, sea, and manmade objects. I heavily embellish each piece with embroidery as well as beads to enhance the surfaces making them more tactile, while creating low relief sculptural experience. Within the imaginary landscapes and spaces I create, I investigate the tensions that result from unusual combinations of color and pattern, and from the mix of natural and industrial shapes. My personal iconography includes such images as birds and spirals that to me convey flight and energy. My work reflects my continual search in trying to understand myself and my relationship with the world.
